Daniel Lieberman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology, and the Edwin M. Lerner II Professor of Biological Sciences at Harvard University. His research is on how and why the human body is the way it is, and the relevance of human evolution to contemporary health. Major research foci include the evolution of long distance walking and running abilities, the effects of shoes on locomotor biomechanics and injury, and the evolution of the highly unusual human head.

Prof. Maganaris’ research interest lies on the mechanical properties of muscles and ­tendons and the way they interact to produce forces and movement.

Prof. Costis Maganaris gained his PhD in 1999 at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he also became a Professor of Musculoskeletal Biomechanics in 2005. Since 2012, he has been appointed at the School of Exercise and Sport Science of Liverpool John Moores University, where he has been leading the Biomechanics Research Group. Prof. Maganaris has pioneered experimental techniques and protocols based on ultrasound scanning that are currently being used all over the world for the study of the mechanical properties of human muscles, tendons and joints in vivo. He has conducted ground-braking studies on muscle-tendon-joint mechanics during “controlled” contractions in the lab, and more importantly, during daily activities, such as walking, running and stair negotiation. The importance of this work is highlighted by a number of international prizes and honours, which include the Promising Young Scientist Award from the International Society of Biomechanics in 2003, the Pfizer Prize from the Physiological Society in 2002, and the Post-Doctoral Scientist Award from American Society of Biomechanics in 2001. He has authored more than 150 SCI papers (over 9500 citations, H-index 58), on the structure, function and adaptations of the musculoskeletal system in conditions of altered mechanical loading (eg, exercise, disuse, ageing & disease). Prof. Maganaris has a track record of collaboration with stakeholders involved in policy making, translation of research and societal impact and has received several national and international grants on musculoskeletal biomechanics from various sources, including EU Horizon2020, New Dynamic of Ageing (NDA), Action Medical Research, Dunhill Medical Trust and the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
